My Rating: 3.8 cutesy stars
This book is so freaking cute.
I went into this book knowing it was going to be cute (I mean just look at that cover). And not only was it cute, but it was also laugh-out-loud funny .
It is about a girl named Harper, a southern belle who is a shoo-in for homecoming queen, but thanks to a strange turn of events and poor lip gloss application timing has been made a Paladin. Because of this she gains awesome abilities and a pretty serious destiny, told she must now protect a certain person (whom she does not like) with her life.
The first chapter of this book really pleasantly surprised me. The action was exciting and the violence sort of caught me off guard, so I began to think the end of this book would be kind of epic.
But, true to the cute tone of the book, I was wrong. The entire book was building up the tension for what could have been a fantastic ending, but was meh at best.
Still, despite the ending, I really liked this book. So let’s put the ending into the far corner of the mind for now and talk about the characters. And by “characters” I mean Harper.
Harper is AMAZEBALLS. I feel like YA heroines are never girly. They are all tomboys who hate makeup and would rather be doing their own thing than hanging out with a ton of girls. That is totally fine and I often relate to those types of characters more, but realistically there are a ton of girly-girls out there that never get any credit or representation in the Young Adult genre.
I didn’t even know I was missing that until Harper came along. She was SO girly. She was also SO awesome.
Headstrong and determined, she threw herself at everything she did with full-force. Her sister was killed in a car accident when the sister and her friends were drinking and driving, so Harper does everything she can to make her parents proud as well as do everything her sister never got to do.
With her new powers has come (just like for Spiderman) a lot of responsibilities, and she wants nothing to do with them. She is all like: “You want me to be willing to die for someone who was a jerk to me for years? Ha. That is adorable. I will be doing nothing of the sort. Good luck with all of those assassins, buddy.”
What can I say? She has a plan for her life and isn’t going to let some unrelated destiny get up in her plan’s business.
I really enjoyed this book. I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series when I need a cute read to make me happy. Who knows? Maybe the next books will have the ending I was craving from this one.
